An Oakland County lotto club has claimed the biggest Michigan Lottery game history prize, a $1.05 billion Mega Millions ® prize.
The four-member Wolverine FLL Club’s winning ticket matched all of the numbers drawn Jan. 22– 04-26-42-50-60– and the Mega Ball 24. A club member bought the winning ticket at Kroger, situated at 47650 Grand River Avenue in Novi.
” A club member saw an indication that the jackpot depended on $1 billion and bore in mind that they had not purchased their tickets yet, so they pulled into the Kroger,” said the club’s representative and lawyer, Kurt D. Panouses, Esq. “When you play, naturally, you dream of winning, but the reality of it has been excellent.
” This kind of cash will impact the households of our club members for generations to come. We prepare to stay simple and pay it forward through charitable giving in southeast Michigan.”
The Wolverine FLL Club picked to get their prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $776 million instead of annuity payments for the overall amount. After necessary earnings tax withholdings of 24% federal tax (about $186 million) and 4.25% state tax (about $33 million), the club got about $557 million.
For selling the winning ticket, Kroger got a $50,000 reward commission. Quickly after they won the reward, the shop announced it would contribute the $50,000 to the Food Bank Council of Michigan.
” Kroger is committed to our mission of feeding our communities,” said Rachel Hurst, Corporate Affairs Supervisor, The Kroger Co. of Michigan. “Strong collaborations with both the state of Michigan and the Food Bank Council of Michigan are integral in driving our objective forward.”
Throughout the record-setting prize run, which began in late September, sales helped kickstart the Lotto’s 2021. From the start of October through the end of the prize run, Mega Millions sales were up about 110% compared to the same period in 2020.
” Having a record-setting prize win in Michigan is terrific news all around,” stated Lotto Commissioner Brian O. Neill. “Lotto sales help support public education and more than 10,000 retail areas across the State. Total Lotto contributions to Michigan’s School Help Fund over the last three fiscal years exceed $3 billion.”
